 High Toughness Fiber

FNM_1

Toughness is the ability of a material to withstand external energy to absorb energy and plastically deform without fracturing.. Spider silk from nature have high toughness due to the coexistence of linear and planar structures. Our lab used linear structured carbon nanotubes and planar structured graphene to mimic the internal structure of spider silk (Nat. Commun). This fiber has the world best toughness, 12 times the well-known high toughness fiber Kevlar and 6 times of spider silk, receiving attention as the next generation bulletproof fiber. Our lab is aiming to develop fiber with high strength and high toughness, which is mass producible. Also, by combining graphene and carbon nanotube’s energy storage function with energy generation technology to form the base of next generation wearable devices.

Commun).

 Electro-Magnetic Interference Shielding

FNM_2

With the growth and increasing use of electronic communication devices, electromagnetic fields are causing negative effects on the human body and malfunction of electronic devices, growing into a social issue. Because of this, the field of electromagnetic interference shielding is of great interest from everyday life to national security and aerospace industry. Previously, EMI shielding was mainly done by using metals to reflect & scatter or by using magnetic & dielectric materials to absorb electromagnetic fields. Metals are the most widely used EMI shielding material due to its good performance, but limitations such as weight, process, and corrosion limits use in wearable or portable devices. Our lab aims to replace metal based EMI shielding by using non-metal materials with good electrical conductivity & mechanical property, such as carbon nanotube and graphene, to develop practical and effective EMI shielding technology.

 4D Printing

FNM_3

3D printing is the realization of a three dimensional structure by extruding various materials into two dimension planar structures and stacking them. Termed as the third industrial revolution, 3D printing is being used in many fields from everyday life to specialized fields including industry, engineering, and medical. Recently going beyond simple 3D structures, 4D printing technology, 3D printing smart materials that responds to external stimuli such as light, heat, and humidity, is emerging as the next generation research area.

Our lab is researching functional materials that are durable, sensitive, and fast responsive to external environment and apply it in the next generation technology 4D printing to fabricate realize environmentally sensing and self-powered artificial muscles. Furthermore, converging with our lab’s energy generation/storage technology, we are aiming for “5D printing”, a new concept beyond 4D printing where two or more complex functions exist.
